  • Dear Reader,

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) could pull out of its military mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a move that would come as a surprise but is likely linked to the heavy casualties suffered by South African troops in recent weeks.

The potential withdrawal of Southern African troops from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) raises fresh questions about the region’s security and the fate of the Congolese army’s fight against M23 rebels, who are backed by Rwanda.

  • Trump’s renewed push for aggressive oil drilling is shaking up global energy markets, with falling crude prices threatening Africa’s top oil producers while offering relief to its energy importers.

His words are already becoming a reality: Olu Verheijen, special adviser to Nigeria’s president on energy, pointed out that the US has witnessed a stark shift in energy policy following Trump’s return. “The renewed emphasis on fossil fuels – particularly oil and natural gas – has altered investment flows, with drilling activity increasing in Texas and Alaska,” she said.

So what pains and gains are expected for African oil producers and importers?
