  • Conditions in Kenya better than in Ghana but the youth still protested – Gyampo tells Ghanaian youth to learn a lesson

The youth of Kenya have shown a way to demonstrate against the government and get the authorities to rescind their draconian decisions, a professor at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo has said.

He explained that Ghanaian youth will not have to burn parliament or destroy properties as what happened in Kenya but they can still protest to get the government to be responsive to their needs.

“Fellow young people, I am telling you that the only way we can guarantee our future is to ensure that our leaders work in a manner responsive to our interests, there is a leadership failure and one way to do that is for us to come together and keep them on their toes.

  • Students and teachers at Kaleo Senior High Technical School (KASHTS), in Nadowli–Kaleo District of the Upper West Region have been left without a well-equipped functioning science laboratory since 2016, with a telling impact on Students performance.

Despite the school being a pure science the school is grappling with congestion and inadequate infrastructure such as dormitories

The school which was founded in 1991 by the Catholic Church, presently has a population of 1,638 students and runs courses such as: General Science, General Arts, Home Economics, Agriculture, Building & Construction, Wood Works and Metal Work.

Despite its contributions to education over the years, the school is plagued with a myriad of challenges including the lack of a well-equipped Science Laboratory, inadequate dormitories for girls and inadequate classroom blocks.

The absence of a well-equipped spacious science lab compels management to still rely on a room that was dedicated for General science Lab built 33-years ago, which comes with limited seating capacity coupled with outdated equipment for the increased student population.

The building was about 90 per cent complete awaiting just the installation of the equipment before it was abandoned by the contractor due to lack of financial commitment from the Government, our sources have said.

According to authorities, all efforts made by the school to bring back the contractor to site to see to the completion of the project were unsuccessful.

Some students who are largely affected by the actions and inactions of the contractor and government vented their frustrations while appealing to the government to take steps to ensure the completion and handing over of the project to them for use.

  • Residents of Kwashieman live in fear due to poor drainage system

Residents of ‘Kwashieman-Addy junction’ in the Ablekuma North District may continue to live in fear and panic amidst the rainy season due to poor drainage system.

The area is deprived of adequate gutters as residents often suffer flooding whenever it rains.

‘Kwashieman Addy junction’ typically is a lowland area where flooding remains a major challenge during rainy seasons.

The gutters are sapped and can no longer contain the volumes of water in the area, yet the sewers are choked with a stench posing a health threat for the people.

They equally frowned on lack of public toilet facilities and household lavatories as it compels the people to practice open defecation.

Unit Committee Member, Dina Tagoe on the other hand blamed the situation on the practice of dumping waste into the gutters by the residents.

She disclosed a decision by the Assembly to begin sanctioning offenders and households without lavatory.
