Slaves were sold when the master died or his fortunes were depleted. They were sold to finance the owners vacations, weddings, for land transactions, to buy relestate. For whatever the owner needed when money was short. New Year's was the day the owners settled their debts and taxes, often resulting in the sale of slaves and tearing apart families.
