Russia’s interests in Sudan motivate its alignment with the military leaders and the strongmen hungry for power, which is opposed by the pro-democracy movement in the country. To safeguard its interests in the African continent, Russia seeks to enhance its presence in Sudan, establish a Russian military base in the Red Sea, and extract as much as possible of Sudan’s gold. This paper seeks to understand what are the roles played by the paramilitary Russian Wagner group in Sudan? How do the activities of the Wagner group undermine a democratic transition and the rule of law, and produce insecurity in Sudan?
