Each house had a couch, food, ice box, a fan that blows air, a bathroom IN the house, laughter, other 9 year old girls her age, playing innocent games in the yard with the prettiest fabric dresses. Grammie put the bundles down on the back porch of each white family and held her youngest brother and sister while her mama looked down at the floor (Shouldn’t look white folks in the eyes. That’s challenging them they say. Just look down. Answer promptly.) That way they will probably pay you after they approve of your work. She was always relieved when Mrs. Johnson would stop snap pin’ at her Mama about a Nat having died on the collar of a shirt in the basket! After a while Mrs. Johnson gave up the money! It was close and she paid every penny of that $1 for washing them nasty clothes them nasty white folk.
