All I know is that I live very very well down here. I live in a high end “Pueblo Magico” (considered a Magic Town by the Mexican Gov). I make USD by working remotely doing web design for clients in the US and Canada. I live in a little one bedroom casita with epic views of the surrounding mountains. I pay $215USD ($4200MXN) for rent, electric, and internet. That is below average for rent here but is still considered expensive by the locals. When I purchase things like imported items in the health food store, they are considered luxury items. $400MXN ($18) is a lot for a large canister of hemp seeds, but that’s not a lot in the US. I routinely buy imported beer at $40–60MXN ($1.80-$2.50USD) and that is also considered a luxury good. Most beers are bought for less than $20MXN. And to put it into perspective the average wage someone will make whether they work as a barista in a coffee shop, day labor, domestic help, taxi drivers, etc is about $200MXN ($10USD) a day. When I work, I bill at an average of $40/hr ($900MXN). So in one hour I will almost make as much as a local makes in a week. So yes, $100USD ($2230MXN) is A LOT to 80% of Mexicans.
