  • A directed-energy weapon (DEW) is a ranged weapon that uses concentrated energy to damage or destroy targets, rather than a solid projectile. DEWs can use: lasers, microwaves, particle beams, and sound beams.
DEWs can be used to target: personnel, missiles, vehicles, and optical devices.
DEWs are becoming more powerful and prevalent, and are being integrated into air, land, and sea platforms. The United States, China, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, India, Israel, and Pakistan are all developing DEWs. Iran and Turkey claim to have DEWs in active service.

Our daily Editor's picks, featuring the best of our reporting and analysis

Romain Gras delivers this deep dive into the situation on the ground.

  • Dear Reader,

Is Tinubu’s bromance with Macron hurting Nigeria’s neighbours?

It is the question asked by Eniola Akinkuotu: President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria is seeking to return Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali into the ECOWAS fold before his tenure as the union’s chairman ends in July.
